The Building Blocks of Forest Ecosystems

Understanding the core elements that make forest ecosystems resilient, diverse, and vital to our planet's health.

Non-living elements that shape every ecosystem — sunlight, air, water, climate, and soil. These physical and chemical factors set the stage for all life.
Forests absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and lock it in biomass and soil — a critical natural process in the fight against climate change.
The rich variety of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms in a forest. Greater biodiversity means a more balanced, stable and resilient ecosystem.

Short-Term Recovery Strategies

Four science-backed approaches to help forests and communities recover after wildfire — from natural regeneration to cutting-edge technology.

Natural Regeneration Assessment
Fire-adapted species like pines and manzanita resprout on their own. Soil is tested for nitrogen and phosphorus loss to guide recovery decisions.
