ENO Schoolnet Association

ENO Schoolnet Association is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation based in Joensuu, Finland. ENO Schoolnet Association (ENO) has been registered as an association in 2009 although its network and activities started in 2000 in a primary school in Eno, Finland. ENO runs the Environment Online (ENO), a global network of schools and communities for sustainable development. Environmental themes are studied throughout the school year and campaigns are arranged simultaneously around the world. Over 10 000 schools from 150 countries have taken part in ENO activities, and have made concrete actions for the environment such as having planted 30 million trees so far. Cities and municipalities have joined ENO Green Cities Network to support ENO schools. ENO is a voluntary network and has ENO country coordinators in about 60 countries (2022). The coordinators share information about ENO and report their national activities to ENO. ENO has several campaigns and activities running every year, for example ENO tree planting days, ENO art recycling competition, ENO weather week and ENO energy saving week. The ENO tree planting days are our longest run campaign since 2004 and it is held around the World Biodiversity Day in May and International Day of Peace in September. Those countries whose environment does not allow tree planting during those times participate at a more suitable time of year. ENO organises conferences and seminars on sustainable development and had a series of Act Now! conferences every two years from 2011-2017 with the themes of forests, fresh waters, renewable energy and 100 million trees. In 2019 ENO launched the Climate agreement of schools 2019-2025 with a target of sequestering 3 million tons of CO2 by activities done by schools worldwide. The ENO 20-year celebration was held in September 2020 organised by ENO India. The online event “Peace is green” was a 24 hour web session which reached approximately 1 million participants from 113 countries. Environmental forestry (2006). She is currently enrolled at the University of Eastern Finland as a Ph.D candidate in Applied Education with the topic of Co-creation in an international network. She has completed Professional Teacher Education (2013) and has a minor in Development studies (2012). She worked at the European Forest Institute for almost 6 years (2001-2006) and is currently employed by the ENO Schoolnet Association (started in 2012) and the Karelia University of Applied Sciences (since 2007). Kaija has participated in international projects funded under the Intelligent Energy Europe both as an overall coordinator (BioSolESCo) as well as a project manager (Setcom). She has also coordinated projects funded by several national funding bodies (e.g. Ministries, EARDF) and acted as a project expert in projects funded by a broad array of funders. She is responsible for the network coordination at ENO, with over 60 ENO country coordinators worldwide. She was the main facilitator of the World Summit of Students for Climate, which was a climate summit held in Joensuu, Liperi and Helsinki 29.5.-5.6.2019, organized by ENO. The participants were students (135, aged 14-17 years) and their teachers. Her duties also include community engagement projects, development cooperation projects and working with schools on sustainable development issues. Ms. Maire Turunen (female) Maire Turunen works at ENO as an environmental education specialist. She has an M.Sc, in Arts in Media (2004) and a specialist vocational qualification in environmental education (2017). She has over five years of experience of work at the Environmental School Polku operated by the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre. She has worked as a coordinator, an environmental educator as well as a waste and waste water advisor in schools and kindergartens. Ms Turunen started at ENO in 2020 as an environmental education specialist working especially with schools (primary and secondary) and environmental education projects. Her special interest in the creative side of environmental education. She has planned “Earth Play”, an educational music and movement session for the Environmental School Polku and been the creative force in the Palloässät project, where they planned educational material for kindergartens on the Agenda 2030.
